LA UNIVERSIDAD, PROYECTO CULTURAL

Con motivo de los 75 a帽os de la Universidad de Colima, a lo largo de estos meses presentar茅, en este espacios y distintos momentos, algunas reflexiones sobre las instituciones de educaci贸n superior, y la m谩xima casa de estudios colimense, en especial. Empezar茅 compartiendo un fragmento del ensayo que expuse en mi ingreso al Seminario de Cultura Mexicana, corresponsal铆a Colima.

Frente a los profundos cambios sociales, como el ahondamiento de distancias entre pa铆ses ricos y pobres, o la pauperizaci贸n de las formas y contenidos culturales, la escuela, como instituci贸n social, no erigi贸 un proyecto capaz de contender contra el desasosiego cultural.

En la tarea de transformar lo que no funciona en el sistema universitario urge la revitalizaci贸n y agrupaci贸n de los acad茅micos con formas in茅ditas de participaci贸n, distintas a las inocuas o acr铆ticas. Pero es necesaria, igualmente, la compenetraci贸n de la universidad en la sociedad, su participaci贸n en lo que 脕ngel D铆az Barriga llam贸 en el Teatro de la Universidad de Colima (septiembre 2010) una nueva perspectiva civilizatoria. En ese sentido, el profesor argentino Roberto Follari ofrece pistas para construir una forma de inserci贸n social distinta de las universidades.

a) Enriquecer la cultura institucional rompiendo con el insularismo y fusion谩ndose con la sociedad para incorporarle una dimensi贸n distinta a ambas: 鈥淟lenemos la universidad con gente de la calle, con exposiciones, conferencias, mesas redondas, cursos breves de difusi贸n con calidad… Es uno de los modos de dejar de ser instituciones fundamentalmente profesionalistas, dirigidas al otorgamiento de credenciales y t铆tulos鈥.

b) Revisar y fortalecer las carreras y 谩reas human铆sticas y sociales. Construir contrapesos efectivos y racionales contra la idolatr铆a de la t茅cnica, porque a la raz贸n instrumental tiene que oponerse su examen cr铆tico, de sus efectos culturales y no solo econ贸micos, porque la educaci贸n no es nada m谩s preparaci贸n para el trabajo, sino un espacio determinante en la transmisi贸n intergeneracional de valores y bienes simb贸licos; de autoconciencia y reflexividad social.

c) La universidad tiene que ser un espacio central en la discusi贸n p煤blica, plural y abierta, de las condiciones socioculturales y el destino de las sociedades, pero debe empezar por s铆 misma. Es la universidad sitio donde se debe ense帽ar y practicar la cr铆tica seria, responsable, en donde la sociedad encuentre v铆as de reflexi贸n, alguna br煤jula dentro de la perplejidad reinante.

d) La universidad tiene que asumir como obligaci贸n vincularse y servir a los otros niveles del sistema educativo; una pretensi贸n secular dif铆cilmente practicable. Ni el sistema educativo b谩sico, ni el superior, pueden asumirse como independientes uno respecto del otro, menos como antagonistas.

La educaci贸n superior y la universidad p煤blica tienen una funci贸n social y responsabilidad hist贸rica innegables: ejercer el pensamiento cr铆tico con un compromiso social. La cr铆tica tiene que ser premisa distintiva. Dice el fil贸sofo mexicano Carlos de la Isla: 鈥淟a Universidad, conciencia cr铆tica de la sociedad, significa que la misi贸n de la Universidad es pensar (la investigaci贸n no es otra cosa que pensar al mundo y a nosotros en el mundo), ense帽ar a pensar (y 茅sta es la esencia de la educaci贸n universitaria), transmitir y acrecentar el pensamiento (en esto consiste la extensi贸n de la cultura)鈥.

En ese sentido, las universidades p煤blicas deben ser un proyecto cultural. Constituirse en proyecto cultural es complicado en s铆 mismo, por lo que entra帽a el desaf铆o, y porque las presupuestos no conceden valor a la llamada 鈥渢ercera misi贸n鈥, la extensi贸n de los beneficios de la docencia y la investigaci贸n a quienes no asisten cotidianamente a la universidad.

Los propios planes de desarrollo son limitantes, pues acusan falta de imaginaci贸n y claridad en la identificaci贸n de las coordenadas que construir铆an un horizonte cultural propio. Los esquemas de evaluaci贸n de las universidades desde帽an su funci贸n cultural para concentrarse en 鈥渋ndicadores鈥 que abstraen las realidades. Si no se eval煤a no existe, y, por tanto, no es importante, es una expresi贸n que resumir铆a tal visi贸n; as铆, la aportaci贸n cultural es prescindible.

Para Jos茅 Saramago, la universidad es lugar de confrontaci贸n y no isla donde desembarcan los estudiantes para salir varios a帽os despu茅s con el t铆tulo. S铆, la universidad debe ser un sitio de confrontaci贸n, en distintos sentidos: del estudiante contra los otros estudiantes, contra otros profesores, contra instituciones normalmente construidas para la homogeneidad, contra otras formas de cultura, contra varias expresiones de la inteligencia, de cuyo encuentro debe salir fortalecido y con una visi贸n m谩s incluyente, tolerante y solidaria. Entenderlo, es parte de esta concepci贸n de la universidad como proyecto cultural.

    3.-I agree with Carlos de la Isla unfortunately today’s teachers are lazy and most of them have lost the motivation to teach new generations and their performance has declined considerably.
